Original tam, original insignia, can't say if the insignia and tam have always been together, that an individual call. As long as you realize that the crash helmet is missing, then it should not be a problem. If you want a complete panzer beret I would recommend buying them as a unit because the beret tams come in many sizes as do the crash helmets, and they look pretty goofy when you get a small tam on a large crash helmet.

I completely agree, also I would imagine it would not be an easy task to find a crash helmet without the tam, it would probably be easier to find the tam such as this one.

If you look at period photos, the tams appear to be all the same size, that's why some look floppy and some look tight.

            Jerry,

I don't think the tams all came in the same size. I have handled some that were definitely a lot smaller body size than others. I avoid the tiny ones just out of personal preference. I actually pull the tams off if the owner/seller allows, just to see the differences. There were quite a few manufacturers and they may vary by manufacturer. I don't have a definitve answer and can only speak from observation of the actual berets and I also look at tons of photos.

I could see some variance by Mfg as you suggest, but if they were different sized, I would think they would have had to been marked in some way.
              (you know those Germans...)

I have also seen some that were stretched out, elastic bands destroyed, and some that were shrunk from obviously being washed at some point.

              still a rare bird.

                Jerry,

You may have something there...I never even thought about someone washing one of these and shrinking them, that is entirely possible.

Why is this hard to believe? Anyway, In my experience of selling items I have always been asked the question of where and who it came from so I was heading this question off before it was asked. Of course we all know it doesn’t matter if it came from Santa Claus as long as its a legit piece in which this one is. In regards to the size I was surprised how large it was once I received it. It fits my noggin and that's saying something ! It still has a good amount of the elastic tension remaining as well. It's really a great piece of history.

I found a couple of beret photos that helps illustrate the size differences, the differences are almost comical.

                    First the small one...

                        Great pics!

And the early first pattern shown is different enough that it may be hard to compare, but I still think the top one show is actually the Large one ( large size crash helmet pulling cover tight) and bottom one is a small size crash helmet (leaving single sized beret to flop in the wind)
