            Hi David
            the eagle is not SS and the stitching is really bad, but the deaths head insignia should be and is stitched on with red thread which is correct.

              most likely GI or wife applied eagle from his booty pile..

                    Looks like an original fez, from the looks of the inside shot photo. It appears the original eagle was taken off (original maroon stitching appears gone)and another (Army)eagle sewn on post war by the vet or other family member.

                      Back when these items had no real value and were often merely used as playthings by vets' kids, all sorts of things were done with them. Just look at what was done to adorn the fez brought home by one vet using some of his other Dachau souvenirs (photos courtesy of John T.):
