    ss 8 year(4YR as well)

    Hi guys,
    My bother steve and myself are at present putting a information and reference website together concentrating on ss 8 years.

    What i need from you guys is the dimensions and weights(if possible) of your examples.
    In particular diameters.
    If you can provide weights,can you try to give the weight of the medal without the ribbon.

    This website will be for all collectors,so please dont be shy.it only takes a second to put a ruler or caliper across you awards.

    4 year dimensions/weights are welcome as well because that award will be added after the 8 year is complete.

    regards keifer

    But I will send you some info on my SS 4 Year service medal next week
    Goodluck with your project!
    Cheers, Ade.

      Thanks Adrian,The next comment is not aimed at you.

      It seems to be a reoccurring habit with forums that people are super fast at posting items on here for opinions.But it seems when people are asked to contribute some information they cant be bothered.All i simply asked is for some of you to simply provide the dimensions and if possible weights.

      If you check my previous posts on 8 years,you will see that i have always provided good relevant information and accurate opinions on peoples examples.

      Frankly im sick of this one way street and i wont be wasting my time except on the few who actually give as much info as they take.

        Hi Keifer;

        I'd love to help you out but I don't currently have any at the moment. I get em but people keep buying them away from me. Go figure!!!
        Best regards,

        Tony

          Hello Kiefer,

          I understand your frustration... Unfortunately I don't own any examples of the medals you are researching, however, I believe some of my friends here MAY have some SS LS medals and will check on this for you. If they do I'm sure they won't mind me borrowing them to make some images and to record the particulars you're after. Will do what I can to help you out.

          Cheers!

          Adam

                Thanks guys,great info.
                Thanks for the photos Adrian.
                I must apologize for my remarks somewhat.The majority of people on here are great.I just get a bit frustrated sometimes.I just dont understand why sometimes people just dont seem to want to further the hobby by contributing information,even in the form of simply telling me a dimension.

                I might add that all the guys that have responded to this thread are some of the ones that offer help and information all the time.Its the compiling of all this experience that will make the future of collecting easier for beginners,especially with the encroaching shadow of fakes with us.

                  Hi Kiefer:

                  Firstly I would like to say that I think your project is great and I am fully supportive of forum members requesting info on specific items to enhance our collecting knowledge.

                  Secondly, sorry for the late response, I wanted to get some better pics of my items before I post.

                  I do not have any 8 yr SS medals, but here's some info on two 4 yr SS medals in my collection. These were purchased from a fellow who told me that both of the items were discovered as unissued in a warehouse.

                  As you will see from the pics, one of the two is slightly more "marked-up" from previous individuals scratching the surface to try and detect the under laying material which appears to be a bronze like light brown color. Both medals when held in hand and observed up close, display the very fine "cobbling texture" to obverse and reverse.

                  I will post my dimensions as approximate only as my vernier caliper is of very cheap quality, as well I'm not well versed in it's use i.e. the first decimal place could be out as much as +/- 0.1 mm.

                  Anyhow the dim's that I have measured are as follows:

                  Dim = 38.3 mm
                  W = 3.2 mm
                  Loop H = 16.5mm
                  Loop W = 1.8 mm
                  Eye H = 5.2 mm
                  Letters H = 4.1 mm

                  Unfortunately I do not own a set of scales and therefore cannot provide a weight. If you rquire any add'nl info., let me know and I will send it to you.

                  Good luck with your project and pics to follow.

                        Gordon,
                        is that a wartime catalogue? You will have to excuse me as I am not a medal collector,but one thing I have noticed though in the pictures above the suspension rings are round as opposed to tear drop,so my next Question would be are the photo's above of actual badges or are they artist drawings!

                        Sorry Kiefer I can not help you with the medals as such as I sold all my examples as my main area of interest (in the ss) is cloth
                        cheers,
                        Gary

                          Hi Gary,

                          These SS medals are found with a round susension loop as well as with the tear drop one, and are original. Also the ring on the medal is round in stead of having a ridge in the middle. These 4 years were PAINTED in black.
                          I know this will throw up some dust but they are original!

                            Pieter,
                            Thanks for the information, and I guess you are right as the "General rule" with most collectors I know is if it does not have the tear drop suspension ring and ridge leave it alone, as mentioned medals are not my thing, Boy am I glad I collect cloth
                            cheers,
