    Oberbayern item

A good friend of mine who was an NCO in "Oberbayern" and later an officer with "Der Führer" gave me this photo, thought of interest as I've never seen one in person. He lost an arm during the war and was an aide after that in Italy with division "Reichsführer-SS" where he was captured. He had a unique Allach figure award won for a prewar pistol shooting contest, and laughed telling me he was hung over when his turn came to fire. His father was a 1923 Munich Putsch participant and he still had his father's Blood Order and document. Sadly, I took no photos of those items during my 1980s visits as my reason and research at the time was just his "DF" service. In "Oberbayern" he served under later "Totenkopf" Knight''s Cross holder Kurt Launer.

The flag is obviously huge and I assume was flown at the headquarters of the Standarte.

      Mark,

What a great photo. We would all handle many things differently with hindsight, but I bet you heard some great stories. That flag is huge, I am surprised that it is not prominent in more photos. I'm sure if Oakleaf Militaria had it ,it would be another laughing stock without great provenance. Thanks for posting,

      Richard

        Mark,

        very interesting picture!

Do you have more infos or pics you would like to share concerning that unique Allach figure you mentioned?

When and where was that pistol shooting contest?

It would be great to hear more about all that!

Looks like my friend loaned a copy of the photo to another author also. I believe it may also be in the German edition of "Images of the Waffen-SS" but I never saw a copy.

            Your point is ?

                  Actually

Actually it did survive. It is my Bedspread and I am laying under it now typing on my Mac Book Pro.

Alright Niblet !! That was way out of line....although I laughed...and no we dont have matching honor rings ! That other guy got him to the Altar first. I am straight as an arrow unless your talking about Muenster. That's different !

                          Robert

Robert, wow thanks for the picture. It reminds me of the Movie "The Odessa File" where the Guy pretends to be SS to penetrate the Odessa Organization. When he is interviewed to see if he was really a Guard at Flossenberg they asked him what it looked like and he described a Castle on a Hill above the Camp. One of my favorite shows.

                            I know this scene well.

I visited Flossenbürg a couple of times and it gives me more impressions with the sourounding area then any other camp memorial place.

                              Robert,

have you ever been in the former Casino there?

While sitting on it´s terace the SS-men had an extraordinary view onto the rollcall-ground.

The guard-house with big gate in the middle (although because of a different entrance they used hardly any prisoner ever went through) is a very interesting and still in original condition as well.
