I believe they are original left over unissued stock. They are not popular, with collectors, because of the very few photographs of them in wear. A nice enlisted M-43 with two piece insignia would be more desireable than one of these late-war iron gabardine M-43 caps with the trapazoid insignia.

I would find an exception in the SS wool M-43 cap with feldgrau wool trapazoid. I would walk through fire to find one of those.
