Peter Jenkins and I both took the time to inspect the flag previously discussed in the now closed thread at the SOS. The only thing evident is the fact that the pictures are terrible. Peter and I both agree the flag is undoubtedly original and period. What purpose it served will likely be never known. These type of early items do exist but can also be difficult to market. No I did not purchase it as it is too large for my collection. If I had room, I may have made an offer. I presently own a NSKK or SA black banner manufactured of identical material that is also undoubtedly of the period..My thoughts for what they are worth and adieu.

Your explanation is perfectly fine with me. Frankly, I saw pictures of this piece many months before it was discussed here. My first impression was negative as was the majority of the positions expressed here. I deeply respect the opinions of TGN and Pete Manzie. That is why I took the time to examine the piece and it's construction. In hand, it is a one looker as being a period piece. Was it found at Dachau? Who Knows. The flag had already changed hands from at least one vet to another before their ship docked in New York. I also have no dog in this fight so only wanted to add our collaberative thoughts on the item. Peter went to look at it after I recommended he look at it. Without me saying anything to him with regards to my opinion, he came back and concurred as to it's period construction. Up until the time I saw this piece, my thoughts wee it was either a barracks or mess hall banner. However, it had an edge rope meaning it was meant to be flown. Possibly a very early flag that had been stored for historical conservation and later taken by a souvenir hunter.
As I have said so often in the past, not everything in collecting can be vetted by photograph.
