    M36 SS Dagger Chain

A friend of mine died recently and his family has asked me to sell some of his things. Although he was primarily a US Revolutionary and Civil War collector he did have some WWII items (his father was a vet and brought some things back). These fittings which appear to be from a second model chained SS dagger were found amongst all his other odds and ends and their history is unknown. I believe that they are authentic. At some point they have been polished and some of the rouge is still in some of the recesses and grooves but it's all there including the SS proof on the reverse of the chain (hard for me to photograph with my bad camera). Also, it appears that the last link on the long chain has been period repaired.

What do you think, and what would a fair price be for just the fittings?

    Thanks,

    Chuck

The difference between the current price of an M33 and an M36 - approximately $2500 US. That is probably what will happen to it - someone will mate it with an M33, and then sell it off as an M36 some day . . .

I think you have what is called a type 3 chain. The split in the skulls inside the nose is what makes it so.

Tell me more about this "type 3" chain. I haven't heard of it before.

There are many chained daggers out there that are missing their chains- I'm sure you'll have no problem getting a premium for it!

                      Chuck,

Take it to the SOS and let the dealers fight over it. It is valuable so do not let it go until you know the full value.

I agree that it appears to be a a Type III chain. Any chance of getting a really clear photo of a single skull link to use for educational purposes?

                              M36 SS Dagger chain

I have a 1933 Officer's dagger without the chain. Have been looking for several years for the correct one. Have never heard of a "type three" before and would like more information as to the difference between it and a type I or type II. Any information would be appreciated. Tomt
