and now the best for last... and the owner was puzzled why it did not have
              a reichsbetrieb number....

Now you know why this piece is posted in the SS section. You will always see Heer tunics converted to SS...
but surprizingly this one appears to be restored the other way around...!!!
hence the title of this thread "reverse restoration M44". On a positive note it does have nice Heer M44 shoulderstraps!

This M44 uniform is referenced in the below book, which covers Heer uniforms and equipment and the author
(I assume owner of the piece) states under the picture that shows the "Betrieb Ravensbrück" stamp the following comment:

"Marking details. Surprisingly shown here is a manufacturer's seal instead of a RBNr that one would expect at this late date in the war".....
Oops! No mention of course in the book that "Betr.Ra" means Ravensbrück, an SS run concentration cap where combat uniforms were made (strictly for the SS as far as I know!)

I guess he specializes in Wehrmacht only... Anyway here's the book; (worth buying!)

                  A pity.

I have seen this done before to a WSS M43 tunic - Heer insignia machine applied by a dealer. I guess he did not know the difference....

Man, you can get anything "published", just goes to show a lot of these guys do not know what they are doing...and this was a basic mistake.

He also shows the late war pattern reversable Hungarian parka (non quilted) in his book (which was patterned after the German one but different in the details).
He explains in his book that its an early German (non splinter) one...Oops! The Hungarian depot markings (not legible) are explained as being German manufacturing stamps...
Other than that flaw its a great book that shows a lot of personal items for those who collect beyond the scope of uniforms!

Well tragedy yes... but not necessarily hopelessly ruined. If the breast eagle is hand stitched on it just like the collar litzen are, it is certainly reversible with no or little damage.
This would be a nice SS restoration project! This is a dream for me to own, "betr Ra" marked, in Italian wool, it does not get any better than that! WOW!

People unfortunately make mistakes all the time. I purchased an SS jacket (for less than an SS price) which in reality was a KM küsten artillery coat with bogus SS insignia.
I fixed it, but of course it had an SS sleeve eagle ghost appearing permanently on the sleeve... I wonder if this M44 has a ghost sleeve eagle?
My hunch is that it was never completed, so with out any insignia whatsoever (it certainly appears to be in stone mint "off the rack" unissued condition) and now mistakenly "finished" as a Heer piece.
Heer uniforms (in disguise!). Again 99 times out of 100 its the other way around!
