    Hi Jim.

Most of these collartabs with lions sewn on, are German made.
Some soldiers in "Frw. Legion Norwegen" only used black blank collartabs like the ones SD used.
The soldiers did sew the lion on to the collartab themself.

There are few period collarpatches on the market.
I have seen several patches with newly sewn on lions.

    Regards
    Derek

      Hi,

In general, insignia was not made for waffen ss units locally in Norway. Norwegian waffen ss soldiers used standard German made insignia. You will find shoulder boards in waffen ss pattern made here, but they was made for Norwegian NS units using the same pattern boards (maybe some soldiers had them and used them as waffen ss soldiers, but it is the exception). GSSN insignia was made in Norway.

Den Norske Legion used a lot of different collar tabs; with ss runes, blank and a tabs with a lion. Embroided lion collar tabs are found in both officers and enlisted version. These collar tabs was ordered directly from the Norwegian Legion to people in Norway and was therefore not ordered via the regular German supply lines. Not much documented information exist on the embroided versions so I can’t comment on the manufacture of these, but IMO local manufacture is most likely, using available parts or material. They are so uncommon that if a handful exists today that would probably be it.

There are also some versions in metal. The one posted in this tread and one other (or more ???). The ones that are made based on the prewar Norwegian M 37 lion is the pattern normally found today, it is the one seen in this tread. Period pictures also indicate a metal version with a quite different lion (position of feets etc) was used.

The metal version where made using standard German RZM black tabs, as the orders wehre done just for the lions. We can assume that the soldiers sewn the lions to the tab themselves. The lion’s has been in circulation in Norway for many years and are not scarce as they wehre used both before and after the war by the regular Norwegian army. For example hundreds where found some years ago and there is of course no problem restoring a blank tab with one of these lions. For these tabs a 100% documented provenance directly from the soldier himself, with period picture of the actual tab in use, is required. These tabs are some of the most rare ones, if period original, but also one of the easiest to make today using original parts.

Regarding the question from Jim Toncar. Norway was not part of the German RZM tax system so RZM paper labels are not found on items made here (same as ss insignia made in Reitz; Belgium). For the sake of argumentation; weather a C label on a blank collar tab is correct other has to respond, but I would normally expect to see A on a blank tab. The tab in the first post is not Norwegian made IMO.

        Pal,
thank you for taking the time to respond, Volunteer items are not my area of expertise but I had come to the same conclusion ......
Norwegian insignia is certainly a interesting area of collecting but almost impossible to find in the USA.

                          Gentleman

Does anyone know if the SS-Skijaeger Bataillon Norwegen wore the same kragenspiegeln as with the Den Norske Legion?

I also recall that there is a thread about the kragenspiegln worn by the Skijaeger and it's mirror style like the Totenkopf division.

Also, is the SS Police Ski company a different unit from the SS-Skijaeger Norwegen?

                            tab

looks like the RZM-papertag on the first legiontab starting this thread has a 5 digitcode??? or is there a 6th number under the black cloth? Just wondering.
