Fellow collectors, this eagle type has been presented for discussion by several forum members. There are those that believe them to be original, based on construction or circumstances of purchase. Others think they are post 1945 manufacture.
This recent thread contained an example of this eagle http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=316879. The owner of the group of obviously original material was not a collector, and had solid providence of his grandfathers service and early memories of the items.
As far as I'm concerned, this is some solid providence, and evidence that these eagles were pre-1945 manufacture. The eagle shown by the vet's grandson is unissued, as were all the SS pieces brought back. I think it's very interesting they were found with a runic EM collar set, still joined with thread, that exhibit some VERY uncharacteristic thin and undersized runes. The runes are slightly over half-width from the norm, and are ridiculously thin - but unmistakenly original.
I suspect the subject eagle is foreign (non-German) manufactured, though I have nothing to prove this. Like the collar tabs, this eagle is distinctly different than the German types: double ring surrounding a slightly undersized swastika, atypical body fletching, odd head shape, and a slight yellow or copper hue to the thread as opposed to the pearl or off-white.
So - do we accept that this type of eagle, given the other "non-reg" SS tabs found with it and it's providence, is an original type?
I say yes - regards, Robert
