I owned a cool leather LW great coat, LVA marked, but unfortunately it was cut down to a short waist jacket.... Was it period done? Perhaps as make shift flight jacket? or post war done? most likely the latter... so less desirable and less valuable... I sold it...Its obviously worth way less than an uncut leather great coat!
But a agree on other examples its not like that...it depends, like a schirmmutze with its buttons and cords removed by the owner to mimmick an altes model visor is just as valuable as an unaltered one if that's how it was used during the war, just as desirable, especially if you can prove it (period picture or something).

I see your point. I am thinking that the collar was made from the excess leather cut to shorten this jacket. It looks to have been hemed with the same two row stitching that the added collar was edged with. Still no way at least from the photos to say when it was done.

A lot of these were worn with the PZ wrap collars worn over the small jacket leather stand up collar....often giving the appearence in photos of these leather jackets having lay down collars with tabs. There is a great photo or even a small series of photos in the After the Battle book on the Ardennes of an SS officer wearing on of these style leather jackets with a leather collar like this one. I have felt for the last 20 years or so that I saw that published photo that the collar was added.
