    sUMMARY

    I haven't owned a helmet cover for 30 years, but his is an interesting thread.

    Could someone summarize the conclusions of this thread? Or if they are obvious to all but me, I aplogize.

      We're probably getting tired of seeing this one, but here is a cover that stayed together with it's helmet after the war.

        camo caps

        The camo cap in patterns L-R , Plane tree no.5-6, with early lateral plane tree visor
        second cap ; plane tree no. 1-2 with plane tree lateral pattern visor (pictured in Beavers Book)
        third cap ; blurred edge with steel grommets ( pictured in Beavers Book)
        These little baseball caps are not the easiest thing to find especially the early patterns which I especially like .

              the last cover is a real wartime example of how a helmet cover should look.
              Look at the sewing style and thread.

              This is vintage.

              Now the caps are a whole different ball game.

              It took me 30 years just to learn them.
              One afternoon going through a bag of 8 of them to get my final education.
              I seen my first one when I was 15 .........I am 45 now.
              It had grommets ..........sadly they rusted out .......of a nice oak leaf with hand sewn patches.

              When your education at an early age begins with original vintage pieces .......it is enlightening to see REPRODUCTIONS appear on the scene ....REAL just stand out ......

              No if's ......why's .or But's......
              same as helmet cover's ..

              speaking of that ......

                    Hello Guys,
                    I'm here, I'm following this confused threads from some days. Are some years I'm not anymore interested to intervene in these discussions, as they assume more often just a ego battles. Like others I noticed that the real big collectors are disappaered and often for the jung collectors is necessary to found something interesting gò back in the old posts..
                    But naturally i'm enjoy often interesting threads on WAF, not in this case anyway.

                      Absolutely NOTHING has been said WHY the cover that started this thread, also the cover in the Beaver book and all the covers that share same characteristics (thread type, wear pattern) are fake.

                      So many arguments have been presented in support of this cover and all of them were entirely ignored by those who claimed it to be a fake.

                      This senceless thread turned into total absurd. Pages and pages talking about almost everything and nothing at the same time.

                      Look, guys millions and millions of these covers have been made during the war: different patterns, different models, different materials, don't forget many different makers made them. Now seriously Mr. kamo man, Fritz, and Dr. Strangelove HOW MANY original helmet covers do you have - all three of you together? One, two? maybe three? how many of original covers have you hold in your hands long enough to learn it? and with it you try to tell us you KNOW it is fake. Pardon me but what do you really know in reference of millions of helmet covers made? Oh I forgot it is secret, right.

                        Thats not the point. I have read about some reasons why a cover can be good or not, in this threads! not all the secrects have been told, but Dr. Strangelove have the same opnion as I have. Sometimes you can say it´s a fake or not, but you can´t explain it to 100%. Unfortounately i can´t do this on covers, so I will read and try to learn.

                          Let me readjust your point of view on two issues:

                          1st This particular thread here was by no means started over a fake cover.

                          2nd The fake double needle stitch cat has left the bag already. So I wouldn't say "Absolutely NOTHING has been said WHY the cover that started "this" thread (...) are (is) fake".

                          As far as I am concerned I own none, never have and also have never seen one other than on three blurry black and white photo-copies that I've made from a book owned by a remote acquaintance.

                            Well I thought it is the "Plane tree first pattern SS Helmet Cover" thread about Francesco cover.. Too many threads .. but you got my point right and Francesco's cover is original even if madandi and some others do not like it.

                                I like Jim Toncars caps! As they A"sit" they show a couple of details you really only see in period photos..which the repos I've seen (and own) dont conform with. I only have a repro camo cap and cover, I won't buy what I just dont feel comfortable with, and have not held enough to in hand to have the education necessary to feel comfortable. If I had been fortunate enough to hold the number of caps Owen has, would feel differently. Luckily I too started out with a mentor that let me hold everything, and explainedshared what he knew. The only camo cap he ever owned was the remains of it in a zip lock baggie, had been hit by battery acid, but there were some interesting parts remaining, I feel better with the caps than the covers.
