    Early SS collar tab

I am returning to collecting Third Reich items after a long absence. I obtained an SS collar tab 25+ years ago at an Ohio Valley Military Society show. My limited research indicates it may be an early EM/NCO collar tab with silver bullion runes and white twisted cotton piping. I don't have my reference library or experience level where it needs to be yet, so any opinions/observations would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Collar Tab

A reproduction IMO. The materials used and the workmanship are really substandard.

Fuzzy border seems strange. As Peter mentioned the quality of the bullion runes usually are tight and nice on early ones. Sorry but no good feelings here either.

      Can we see the reverse?

Im sure Jim Toncar could give you a more correct opinion on this tab.

It almost looks like the bullion is embroidered over a standard RZM runic collar tab????????

              Just a guess!

Did you hit this tab with a black light. I have a hunch it will light up like a Christmas tree.

I don't have a black light. I obviously need to get one if I am going to be serious about collecting again. Thanks.

Is the piping made of cotton, I think that something is wrong with that.

                      John,
I thought everyone knew the early tabs were piped with German kite string.

                        EARLY? Perhaps... early 1970s!

Those of familiar with kite string are really dating ourselves.

I purchased a black light today, and the white piping "lit up," although it wasn't quite a Christmas tree as Mr. Manzie had wagered. I'm glad I have forgotten how much I paid for this item. Thanks for the observations.

                              Matt,

Please take a needle and carefully push aside the bullion. I am curious what is underneath.
