    "Disgraceful" auction in BBC News

Hi Guys, thought that you might find this of interest:

BBC NEWS | England | Nazi badges auction 'disgraceful'

As usual, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

I went to the auctioneers website and the pic here is credited to them.

    Cheers, Ade.

The only way to get through to these people is to keep pounding into their heads that these are "war trophies" seized by Allied soldiers.

Tell them to watch Band of Brothers a few times.

Do they really think that pics of Allied soldiers proudly displaying their Nazi flags mean that they have all switched to the Nazi party?

Yes, a commando dagger flash...lumped in with the 'evil' stuff. I expect an early US 45th Div patch would get the naieve treatment also...but they would never appoligise would they..

What else is new? A bunch of a-holes talking out of their a-holes as usual.

                        1. An auction house selling a bunch of fakes.

                        2. A museum curator thinks we collectors are "odd", but wants the stuff, as Billbert said, presumably donated to her museum. She might as well just come out and say it.

                        3. And all of the fools attributing the stuff to the 3rd SS Division.

The British vet I agree with though - they should burn all those fakes.

The strap is for a 3rd year Officer Academy student in Artillery, Nebel or Anitaircraft Artillery. The rest I believe are all fake aside from the wreath.

Agreed! The Luft cockarde looks OK.

Should be interesting to see what this lot goes for.

Look on the bright side guys, "no publicity is bad publicity"

To buy an advertisement to encourage people to collect Third Reich Militaria on that page of that paper would cost real money. We collectors just got such an advertisement for free and what's more people read it, noted it, remember it and believe it. A real success in the world of marketing.

Now some "goodie-good" will say no nasty Nazi stuff in my house after reading this but what about the rest of the population who like a little bit of taboo. The interest and price of SS items and 3rd SS in particular just went up. Think of how many collectors read that and thought got put a bit more of that in my collection or how many people reading that are thinking of taking up collecting and think, I am going to get some of that. Believe me bad news sells stuff.

Another thing is people love "naughty" One of the fastest ways to get people interested is to ban it. People love to do things they should not and it drives the price up esp for people with money who can afford. If I am wrong on this then please explain why illegal drugs and the sex industry get more than their fair share of any country's GDP expenditure.

This may not be as bad as we think, I mean if collecting SS was perfectly socially acceptable do you think people would pay the prices they do. The more the so called informed complain and the more they ban, the higher prices and more interest in such things. In fact it really helps to keep it alive, leads to books, DVD's, movies and documentaries

Personally, I think that if such a story of the killing of prisoners of war can still make the news after nearly 69 years then it says something for the on-going interest in this part of history which we preserve esp. when you consider all that has happened since WW2 and who bothers to talk about those POW's and what happened to them and at a time when one quarter of the worlds people today are again at war but hey they are going to stop all that by banning/burning nasty Nazi symbol and blaming Germans. Yeah right ???

Do feel sorry for who ever pays UK 300 pounds for any of those items however. Now that's what needs to be banned, the selling of fakes and those who make them burnt at the stake,

                              Chris
