    Strange SS Officer board . . .

I have a strange SS Officer board for Artillery (red piping), and I would like some opinions about it's authenticity. For comparison sake, I have taken pics beside a Gebirgsjager (green piping). The piping on the Art. board is "fuzzier" than the rayon-cord type piping on the GBJ board - yet upon closer look (and sorry, the pictures don't show this), the "fuzzier" piping has a cross-weaving pattern just like the GBJ board - it's just below the nappy layer of "fuzz". Almost like it is made of the same material, just with the added extra touch! Very strange? Of course, some of the construction techniques between the two vary, but at the same time, they still seem to coincide.

The most unusual feature of the Arty board is that it has (for lack of a better description) a "donor" layer of very thin cello/plastic(?) between the russian braid and the bottom felt. And to top it off, this layer of cello/plastic has words imprinted on it! I've tried to get pics of the writing, but it's difficult to achieve - you almost have to hold them in hand and stretch the russian braid apart in places to see it. Very confusing, as the GBJ board does not have this thin, cello/plastic "donor" layer inside!

Please take look at the pics and feel free to offer your comments. Any good tips as well about how to identify proper construction methods of these boards would be beneficial to all of us, Im sure. I am quite comfortable with GBJ boards, but the Arty boards leave me puzzled a little . . . ???

Thanks in advance for all of your great contributions to this most confusing segment of SS colth collecting!

I've spotted another SS Officer tab on a Dealers site that has a "donor" layer inside - or at least something similar . . .

                      http://www.lastreich.co.uk/shop/viewphoto.php?x=1

They are sew-in boards for a Obersturmfuhrer signal's officer (Lemon yellow) with cyphers, and they too have a orange-colored "donor" layer it seems . . . these can be seen from the underside of the board in the pictures.

Does anybody have a clue about these things?

Doesn't anyone have least bit of information about this "donor" layer in the board? What about the fuzzy piping? Anyone . . . ???

I'm beginning to get a complex over the complete lack of response . . . will someone please say something?

                          Brad,
The piping on your 2 straps are completely different, one is rayon/silk piped while the artillery strap is wool piped, as is the one in the link you provided.

the thing you are describing is quiote normal for this type of piping layer, it is attached to a stiffner these are normally card like the card in the base of the strap, you also find them on Heer straps with secondy piping as well.

I have also see the odd rayon piped officers strap also with this type of card in as well with the piping sewn to the card then the whole strap assembled
