The links are not reaching over to Pakistan, and the fakes are not reaching the original quality and manufacturing technic without seeing them. The best repros are still done in Europe and in the USA.

One of the saving graces in all of this is that the poor "Unfortunate" getting paid $1 a day in Pakistan to make this stuff has no idea often what they are making, what it should look like, who used it for real and when. They just bang out off a pattern often with quite comical results.

The people with passion and real knowledge are the true danger. They understand what they are making and what collectors will look for. Many sadly started out as true collectors but then sold their souls.

The "re-enactor" market has to shoulder a lot of the blame here. They have created the demand for real looking items which allows some of these companies to achieve an economy of scale and put the extra detail in. They have been sent the knowledge via business owners in the West who sell such stuff and collectors who study it as to what it should look like and how they can improve.

Before re-enacting became a big thing, fakes were a lot more one offs or small batch production affairs but to day there is a real market for fake stuff in more than one way. Increased buyers lowers the unit cost of producing an items or creates premium buyers who are willing to pay more for "the right item" Plus re-enactors can put that real wear and tear factor on an item.

The challenge is what happens to excellent copy re-enactment stuff further down the line after the re-enactor has finished re-enacting in it. Who will wind up buying these items 5, 10, 25, 50 etc years on and what will it then be described as ? Also what damage has all of this done to original items which are different from the norm or not text-book ? Makes it a lot harder than it should be that is for sure.

We build our own "Frankenstein" do we not ?

the best part is when they advertise with original insignias stolen from other websites ...

          http://www.ruthmanbadges.com/ww2collar%20tabs.htm

That was already discussed here longer time ago.
