Here is a pair I love, but no one else would probably have them. They are bring backs.

They are die cast with the prongs sent into them during the die casting procedure. Solid back with NO cutouts.

I agree! I always thought these cyphers were hard to authenticate, but now I think I'm even more confused.

For a long time previously, I was determined to find a pair of LAH cyphers. I studied them well, finally bought an expensive, good-looking pair, and was later told they were fake. As much as I'd still love to have a good pair, I'm still too shy about taking another expensive risk.

Whenever a pair are found on shoulderboards, the reverse is always conveniently hidden from examination, and the seller always has a good excuse not to be bending the prongs on 60+ year-old metal. These things are confounding in many more ways than the average piece of militaria. Maybe by the time this thread is over, I'll again be confident enough to look for a good pair myself.

At the last SOS show, I talked to a dealer knowledgeable in all sorts of SS shoulderboards and tabs. When I asked him about the LAH cyphers, he said he stays away from them, because there's too few known originals to examine, they're too well-faked at this point, and too many collectors are too skeptical to buy them. Although this can be surely said of much of what we collect, I think it can be especially said of these cyphers. Again, hopefully by the time this is over, we'll have really fleshed-out (or should I say, "metalled-out") all the facts.

I recently felt the same way, but have deduced that there are 2 accepted versions. I will try to post them together. They are both seen often in the book on the LAH by Stan Cook and Bender. Once you dive into studying them, it is no big mystery.

I am confused again, Steve. Are you saying that the ones Bob posted are the common Reddick fakes???

                        Real Cyphers

IMO, attached to this post are the 2 versions of real cyphers seen throughout the Stan Cook and Bender book on the LAH. I feel it it also quite possible, that these represent the majority of the "real cyphers". In other words, they "may be" representative of the only 2 manufactured versions from the period. The bottom gold cypher is the type pictured on the cover of the LAH book.
