    R & R

R & R image, which originated from a Czech source (a Czech museum Archives posting) but now often circulating on French sites...
Cool picture of SturmBrigade troops resting in Galicia late 1944. Good study of dot camo pants rear view and shirt detail!

Don't know it its him... but according to a French source where I got this image from, it was taken in January 1945 at Wildflecken training center...so he's possibly a recruit... lacking some insignia still. These are medics (in training) belonging to (attachment) the artillery component of Charlemagne. (waffen-Artillerie Abt.ders SS 57). The main reason why I posted this unclear image is to illistrate that the French also wore their shield high up and now we know that's when the Sturmbrigade became Charlemagne, a Division (at least on paper)

I knew this one and I believe the following is from the same sery (got it from a friend a few years ago and never seen it published: so I added a red stripe to "protect" it).
I'm not sure it was post the Galicia camapign (circa aug 44), I believe those were shot before the campaign, certainly in Tchecoslovakia where the sturmbrigade was training, which would match the Czech museum Archives database.

          .

All the components of the Charlemagne were, at least one time, in Wildflecken.
          I'll try to search again.

here's one more, that was published.

Goes nice with this one! I believe WAF member Rene Chavez claims ownership to it... (per his site)
but I found it somewhere else on the web (from Germany) without his tag line...so here it goes! (OK Rene?)

It was published more than 10 years ago in the french "Militaria" Magazine, I don't know who own copyrights?

This whole ownership copy right thing is really a crock I think...(60+ years later???) but I'll always try to do the right thing and notify the "owner" when I borrow/use images which other people claim ownership on... If something's posted on the web it becomes "free game" as far as I am concerned!

Here are the most often encountered embroidered shields of the French Waffen-SS. They also wore the BeVo heer type FRANCE shield.

now if you only had one with the Charlemagne cuff-title in use
Stole the thought right out of my head! Cuff title aside, smashing pictures anyway.

Now that is interesting... I've seen pics of camo uniforms with sleeve eagles and even shoulder boards attached, but never with foreign shields on them!

[quote=NickG;2437173]yeah that would about as easy as finding a "Metz 1944" cuff title picture! (only 1 known so far!)

                                Nick:

I'm out of my element here on the SS forum, but saw your comment above and thought I'd relay something I've seen. I lived in Germany from '88-'92 and used to go to all of the very small militaria shows in the local area. One I especially liked was in a town by the name of Deidesheim and I went each time they had it.

Over the years I befriended many of the local Germans and became pretty tight with the local collecting community. One of my collecting buddies introduced me to an older German gentleman who let me know that he was in the military in WWII and asked if I wanted to see a picture of him in uniform. Of course I said yes and he then pulled a small photo out of his wallet. Low and behold, the picture showed him in a forest in SS uniform with a CLEAR view of a Metz 1944 cufftitle in wear. I was pretty surprised to say the least.

I met the gentleman a few more times and always chatted with him when I did; a very pleasant man. I did ask once if I could get a copy of the picture be he politely declined and I never brought it up again.

Anyhow, that's my somewhat interesting story. I wish that I would have been more interested in SS items to get details for posterity's sake, but such is life.

                                Regards,

                                Drew
