Well now we know how to get things done. Will have to wack you round the head more often. We might get a lot more things photographed and on the forum for all to see.

        Cheers mate, job well done

        Chris

OK now that the photos are up, you can all see that she is a real salty dog which has seen some real use after the repairs. The wear to the collar is consistent with the wear to the collar tabs. She saw some more battles after she left Ravensbruck and God knows how many before she was in for the rebuild.

The tunic puzzled me for along time because I could not understand how it looked like a POW repaired tunic but it had properly applied later war insignia. Interesting also is the early war field grey cloth of the tunic verses the later war field grey-brown cloth used to do the repairs.

When I learned of the Ravenbruck recycle & repair function then I thought well that could explain all.

One extra note, the shoulder boards you can see are not original to the tunic and were put there for the photographic effect.

How does this help us with the study of Pink smocks ? Probably not much at all except to say that Ravensbruck was in production and their products are out there.

I must add however that I find "Phild" observations of the construction of the Pink smock very relevant and would like to add that he is hitting on points which I fully agree with.

Those Pink smocks certainly show all the signs of being put together in a German KZ factory.

Look forward to what others think, Chris

I just recently purchased a "pink" smock from the estand observations are as follows:

            - It's not pink (Why it's called a Pink smock is beyond my comprehension) (How the name stuck is even further beyond my comprehension) We need to find another name I vote for Birch A
            - Smells old and has the appearance of N.O.S.
            - More than one type of thread color
            -- Grey thread
            -- Brown thread
            - Not sewn with the same machine, at least 2 different thread counts
            - Elastic feels good and springy makes a crackle when pulled out & released
            - No UV glow
            - I can see some light through the fabric but far more areas I can't see light just pin holes in some areas but to say you can see through it is not accurate IMO as stated in other posts
            - Pretty decent made however, there are some areas that aren't put together all that well
            - It does have some roller print error where you can see white.

After an in hand inspection I'm convinced these are period original!

Does anyone know the verdict of the smock that started this thread? Was it a legit vet buy or just a story to pump up legitimacy?

Regarding the orginality of the "Pink" smocks, I think for the near future, we will have to live with the fact that we have experienced collectors who belive in them and equal amount experienced collectors who diagree. For those of you who already have the latest 3 books by Michael D Beaver " Uniforms of the Waffen - SS", I strongly recomending study page 840.

                  Best regards, Tom

That smock on page 840 is a nice original with many differences to the pink one or "Birch A" as we should call them now, including the pattern.

To me that pink smock remains a postwar piece. Glad if you like it and think it's authentic ww2, I don't.

                    Cheers

                    Fritz

                      .

I'm still waiting for the results of a dye test from a lab in respect to our big pink smock thread......is the chemical makeup wartime, or is it related at best to somthing we can date effectivly with the technology of post war dye advances......???? There really just is not another way IMO to satisfy everybody.

                      Best,

                      Pete
