I have read before that period photos exist that show the tiger head collar tab in actual use by Indian Waffen SS troops. Does anyone know if said photos were ever published?

German cadre officer

Here's a cool image, that I borrowed for the sake of learning and sharing, of a German Waffen SS Cadre officer serving in the "Azad Hind" Legion. He is wearing, along with the Indian legion "Freies Indien" sleeve shield, a blank collar tab for some reason... or the ss flashes have been obscured? (censored?) A unique image...sorry for the poor quality...

This exact set of insignia was also depicted in an Osprey book on Foreign volunteers! WOW!

That is the picture i was thinking about, taken in southern germany, there are some more photo's that i have seen where they are wearing great coats with ss buckles. But this (above) is the only photo though that i have seen where the tiger's head tab is visibly being worn so far!

Gary, if you are thinking about this image, Indian Leg.troops s in great Coats... no SS buckles visible I'm afraid... Not the best quality... but it shows Indian Legion troops late war... so perhaps already under SS command. Nick

Freies Indien pith helmet shield

Thoughts on this helmet shield??? Ever seen one before? (mounted). Not SS related but worth investigating!

There was another thread on the photo forum not long ago where some one posted recently found Azad Hind photos, although not SS heres the link, some pretty rare and fantastic photos to say the least

Gary I think I found the picture you were talking about!! Probably cropped as it only shows 1 guy wearing a greatcoat, but its clearly a "Freies Indien" trooper in SS uniform! Note buckle and late war great coat with internal hood. I bet its the SS version lacking french cuffs on the sleeve! Not apparent in this image...nor is the sleeve eagle or black shoulderstraps shown unfortunately! But its SS for sure!
