    SS 4 year medal

After looking at several threads on SS service awards I took a chance on this one . The finish is kind of worn but the strike is quite nice, it's better than I can capture on camera. Metal composition , jump ring and the fine stippling all seem correct. I paid $395 for this and believe it to be an authentic Deschler.

absolute original, as my neighbour died many years ago who served with "Das Reich" I received his 2 year medals and his canteen plus some pictures.

              The medal is genuine.

But how anyone can say it's made by Deschler, I'm buggered if I know.

Thank You all for the positive response to this thread. It is nice to have some reassurance on this medal. I could not have done as well without all of your help and the info this Forum provides.

It looks great to me too! The detail is very fine and exactly as it should be.

                      Hi Robin:

Deschler had the small ring attached to the top of the medal, while P and L had the high one.

                      Kindest Regards,

                      John

                          Hello John.......and Clevischi.
                          Thanks.
But the reason I was asking was this.
I think I was the first person to publish in a book (1992) the fact that both Deschler and P&L made these medals.
                          That is a fact............from documentation.
But............here's the point............I have never found anything to indicate the 'characteristics' (if any) that distinguished the 2 makers.
As far as I can see, someone at some stage took the 1992 information and just 'guessed' the now accepted differences.
The point I'm trying to make is that no-one can say for sure which of the differences you mentioned can be attributed to which of these makers.
                          It's all guesswork............and urban myth.
                          Unless someone knows different?

Thanks for that info, Robin! I have always assumed that the "urban myth" you speak of was truth. I am certainly glad to learn this, as I do collect the SS Service medals.

It seems that anytime these medals are offered for sale and/or described, the maker is also identified by those characteristics of loop construction. I guess it just goes to show how these things can happen. One person makes a false assumption, disseminates the information, and soon enough, everybody thinks it's true, when nobody even knows for sure where it came from or why it's true. Unfortunately, I was previously one of the later type of people.

                            Thanks again,

                            Chris
