Here's another pair of WSS Infantrie shoulder boards. What's the jury say on these......good or bad. I really appreciate all of the help, as I'm learning new things every day.

I've seen more SS General officer visor caps that I believe are real than I have matched original W-SS EM INf. shoulder boards in the last 3 years.
It's hard to understand why as there would have had to been at least one mil. pairs of these SS INF boards made (over 500,000 SS inf em's each 2+ sets of boards= 1mil. Not only that, these things are really not even symbolic or offensive...just black cloth boards that would not gahave been trashed due to the symbols..go figure

It's one of those mysteries of the world I suppose. Why so many Runic tabs, but so few BeVo rank? Why so many rank chevrons, but no shoulder boards? Why so many damn cuff titles? I guess we'll never know. Anyway, if you know where I can get any boards for a good price (any colour waffenfarbe), you know where to find me. The dealer sites aren't looking too good right now. Thanks all.

1. What was brought home depends by the GI's, such as the Dachau items, that are rather common today. They GI's liked the popular items such as evil symbols like rune collar tabs or what they easily could find in large amounts. Blank tabs were just not that sexy when you wanted a souvenir from nazi germany or SS. Same goes for plain SS shoulder straps, hence less where brought back overseas. But this cant explain it all since there are for instance large numbers of tropical BeVo skulls and extremely few tropical cap eagles.
2. It depends on what really has been found and what was destroyed and burned in the later stages of war and just after the war. Some insignias exists as field taken examples but they are usually more rare. A lot of SS insignias were stripped of the uniforms before the SS were captured. A lot of these were destroyed.
3. Who knows what still lies around unfound in either GI's bags or in hidden depots somewhere in Europe. There has been numerous of finds that has flooded the marked. As example the numbered Allg SS cuff titles can be mentioned.
This goes as well for when a few larger collections are unloaded into the market. A few years ago grey BeVo skulls were rather rare to find but today there are plenty of them. Popularity among collectors gets some insignias faster away from the market and tucked away into collections for many years. Hence the actual kind of insignia might not be that rare but everyone keeps it in their collections.
4. Some things really are rare despite a few famous photos shown in reference books. The current availability simply reflects the numbers of insignias once manufactured. These are truly rare insignias.
5. Some insignias are rare today because they were taken out of circulation because of orders from the leaders, usually in the early years, and are therefore rare. But some insignias in early style, such as gothic letter Der Fuhrer cuffs were used late in the war any way.
6. Some things cant be explained because it is not logic. There really should have been more of this kind of insignias around but there is not. It can either be explained by the above mentioned reasons alone or in combination, or depending on facts we dont know of today.

P.s. And I agree with the others, I do not like these shoulder straps shown.Last edited by Felix; 09-13-2007, 05:23 PM.
