The prices are a reflection of what collectors will pay. Of course, there is the demand by the purveyors of fakes. An investment in original insignia can help to sell a dubious hat. The market reaches the level of happy buyers and sellers, it is just simple economics.

The skull pictured is a Zimmerman made piece and will be marked 499/41 on the back. Very desirable, especially in this condition. Visor sets are extremely difficult to find when you're actualy looking for them so collectors tend to jump on them straight away.
