I've been given this item to try and ID for a work colleague. It is a G******246;tz von Berlichingen stein and belongs to a colleague of mine who had it passed down to her.
The original owner was Walter Sinka, born in Tallin, Estonia in 1924 and ended up in the Third Reich before settling in post-war England - he died several years ago and left this stein.
It could just be a Goethe souvinir of the play 'G******246;tz von Berlichingen ' written in 1771 but I am curious about the runes at the top right. The colleague (a middle aged lady who knows very little about this era) seems to think that he was in the SS as the chap was very cagey about his past, but she must have got the idea from somewhere.
Has anyone seen anything like this before or can shed any light on it.
I would also be greatful if anyone could translate the lid for me.
