How you guys can tell anything about the age of the wool and if it is artificially aged by these digital pictures is amazing. Maybe I need to get my eyes checked

My Dad was able to see camouflaged positions in WWII from the air because he was colorblind. Perhaps it is a similiar ability that permits some to see past the flaws of digital photography. I for one would never take anyones opinions that are based solely on digital photographs, unless they are known fake products. When it comes to an item purely made to part someone from their cash by deception, there is nothing like a hands, eyes, and nose on inspection. A loop or scanning electron misroscope comes in useful at times too. Willysproject and DavidSW, I'm not doubting your abilities, only my own.

Hi with this example i am looking at the photo and from experiance it will come across a thin and not quite the right shape from the side view. Also the liner isnt what i would expect. I have handled enough to feel that i can answer this question. It all comes with time and ill say now ill never be an expert because the fakers always spend time making the next one better. Like all i have been burnt on wrong ones and it becoming time if you need to convince yourself its right then proberly you will make a mistake IMO

Possibly someone can come up with templates we can use as sort of a master form for the correct hat shapes. Perhaps it's that I'm not a professional digital photographer. I have an expensive, fairly new digital camera with all the bells and whistles. I have a stug wrapper that is all original with pleanty of wear. My camera makes it appear near new with or without flash, indoors or out. It changes the texture of the lining every time. It washes out years of wear in the click of the flash. It can make dull flat ribbed material look smooth, shiny, and slick. These pixelated photos sometimes give a pattern to cloth that does not exist on the fabric. Every person I show pictures of that wrapper too say "fake." The same people upon seeing it in person, can't gush enough about it's originality and honest field wear. Sometimes a photo can be dead on... but I have found that is not the norm. Seeing an item in a digital image and then upon receiving it in the mail, it is usually a far cry from it's photo for better or worse. I for one prefer to withold judgement on a photographically questionable item until inspected in hand, sometimes many hands.

The seller -a german militaria auction house- sells it on an online auction for 200 USD. He states that there is no right to return it when you wouldn't be happy with it...
IMHO and based on these pictures and the conditions of sale, there is something wrong with the wool on this one and it just doesn't look right...

It´s hard to tell from these pictures. You have to consider other facts, too. Who sells it? The price etc. It´s not very likely that you can buy that cap, from that place, for that price – if it is OK... So my conclusion is:

Personally I don't see nothing wrong in this one.
The wool looks correct....OK.. in very worn condition but OK!
The cap's shape is good also the liner,maybe the only concern I can have is on the no vell visible stamp inside the cap.

There is nothing wrong with this cap, the wool colour variant encounterec in German uniforms has many shade variations depending when, where and by whom it was made. This cap crosses that border between WSS and KM Coastal Artillery and as such its value should be based on the latter not the former. Anywhere that gives no right of return should be avoided.
