I got this hat as part of a collection that, like most, contained good and bad pieces. I don't collect these types of items so I don't know what to look for. Is this hat fake or real? I have no experience with these items and would be very grateful for any thoughts or opinions. Thanks in advance for any comments. Please let me know if more photos are needed.

I think to be real these caps need 1) a black lining, 2) a large cheesecloth SS/RZM label,
3) a dated "VA" stamp, and 4) a trap insignia that is sewn STRAIGHT not an an angle like the one that seemed to be on this one.
Prewar, I think uneven insignia were verboten in the elite SS - (tho maybe a few exceptions were madel like helmet decals that were hard to put on right the first time.)
Yet, I like the wear on this cap. Can Donald Abenheim or other cloth specialists chime in?

I believe this is a good cap. Mine is identical to this one (different maker) & was a gift from the late Mike Beaver. The only label Ive ever seen in these is the "Von Reichsf******252;hrer "bevo" labels & Ive only seen this style liner. Not that Ive seen it all BUT I find these are the most common...Regards Rich
PS:
Sorry for crappy pic

There are many with a great deal more experience than I on this point. And I'm sure SOME variations were permitted. Beaver, of course, was miles ahead of almost everyone...
Actually, the only for-sure original Schiffchen I'm personally aware of was brought home by an American wireservice reporter, the father of a high school friend, who'd covered the Anschluss and traded an SS Mann out of it. That cap had the "classic" points I'd referred to.
Maybe it was like different SS helmet liners. The guy I ref'd above also brought home a one-look SS helmet with a pigskin liner - all "bumpy" like an American football!
But why some caps could have makers' inkstamps and others, not, is somthing I can't be alone in wanting explained. Remember, this cap is the 2nd type (the first had the much smaller eagle trap) and you'd think standardization by the late '30s to be the overwhelming rule. So, maybe this is just an exception ....
