    Why we see so many stripped fezzes...

    I just received this PM:

    "hi bwanek.... is still available the fez?

    second question.... the insigna are easy to remove and are ready to be stiched in a m43?"



    I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this sort of thing, since I was unable to sell my beautiful early fez (which was actually worn) for any more than the value of the insignia by themselves.

    Luckily, I am in the process of completing a sale to someone who appreciates a fez in its own right as a true piece of Waffen SS history!

    Unbelievable!!!! Its a shame that this SH*T happens.
    Fezes in my opinion are not appreciated. They are priced to low.
    Saw yours on estand, it is a nice worn piece with a history of the only SS Division to do mutiny.

      I agree, I was wondering why noone had bought it yet, that fez must be one of the best I've ever seen and as you said, to the price of the insignia.
      I would have bought it myself if it wasn't for the fact that I'm in the process buying insignia from two members of the forum.

        OUCH Just imagine how many uniforms and pieces of headgear have been stripped over the years. It's a real shame this is still being done today

          That is a real shame, I am very saddened to read that. My feeling is that any colector who would do that has no respect for the historical value of the items we collect.

            In my opinion, people who do this type of thing are not collectors at all, but maybe more like some neo nazis fascinated by little swasticas, and not by history.

              It's definately a crime against the collecting community to strip any servicable uniform item - in some circumstances, like a severely mothed piece where it's reduced to fragments, I can understand a "salvage" attempt. However, the skulls on many red fezes are slightly oversized, IMHO. The skull on my fez is about 1/4 larger than a typical sidecap skull - it may have just been that the larger pattern was available when the bulk of these maroon hats were assembled. The eagle is normal sized.

                  Original insignia is needed to add to fake caps to make them saleable for big dollars. A fez is the cheapest was to get original insignia. Sadly, it is just a matter of profits.

                    I purchased my fez over 12 years ago for $350. I recently sold it for $950. and I hope it has found a good home with someone that appreciates it for what it is and not only for it's insignia.

                    With a $350. initial investment I could have easily ripped out the insignia purchased a so so used m43 and presto, instant SS muetze! I'm incapable of doing that and the thought never crossed my mind. The historical aspect of the piece was way too valuable for that to make sense.

                      Very true, but it will still be a fake with period insignia, so everyone focus on "the" cap!! As for the fez, I think the market will regulate that...the more fezes will be "destroyed" the more the prices will climb for a good fez.

                      I am also no fan of that behaviour, but it's clear to see that we have a gap between the high prices of removed insignia and the low price of a nice and complete fez. And that's wrong IMO.

                      The neonazi statment from one member I still don't get. Such comments don't do our hobby good. I rather think that it is the greed that drives such people and not any politcal intentions.

                      My two euro cents.

                        I believe those fake put-together M43s with fez-insignia are easy-to-spot. All fezes that I saw had trimmed insignia, while original M43 hats have insignia with rayon folded to the reverse.

                          "Insignia on a Fez is permantly attached. However, if you boil it in hydrochloric acid and then soak it in acetone for 24 hours it should come right off."

                              After reading that some of the old time collectors "swapped out" liners and straps on helmets with regularity and thinking nothing of it... I wonder if there is some of this at work with the cannibalizing collectors. In the automobile world there are purists who want an original model T, and then there was all the guys who chopped 'em up into hot rods back in the 50s and 60s.
                              Historically, the SS Fez is to me , more interesting than most any other SS hat. Here is an iconic symbol showing a combination of the now archaic symbol of Islam and the dreaded elite symbol of the SS. The Bosnian/Bosniac muslims have been on the "wrong" side for millenia, as for many of them, their ancestors were NOT the the invading Turks that had conquered the area, but were actually indigenous to the area. As a gnostic sect of Christianity known as the Bogomils they were persecuted by the "main stream" church , and as the books say, happily converted to the Islam of the new rulers, finding the Ottoman Turks, and Islam, to be much fairer than their old Christian overlords. Also interesting about the Fez, was it was beginning to fade out of use, as the Dictator Attaturk in his zeal to modernise Turkey up to the Western standards as fast as he could had prohibited the wearing of the Fez-under pain of death. The SS Fez is a primary object of immense historical wealth.
