I have a collar tab that has SS runes made with hand-embroidered flat wire. They do have the proper buckram backing and appear to be authentic otherwise, as well. I have, so far, not been able to find examples of collar tabs made with flat wire runes in textbooks, etc. However, as I said, they do look completely authentic to me. I was told by someone that they began making flat wire collar tabs in 1942, and that they could have been an officer's private purchase. The flat wire does give them a higher quality appearance, in my opinion.
I have also been told that the use of hand-embroidered flat wire nearly precludes the likelihood of faking. The reason being that hand-embroidering with flat wire is an unnecessarily difficult level for fakers to attempt, producing something that is not the most recognized as authentic by the average collector. In other words, it's simply much more practical to produce something that would be much easier to produce and sell as an original. Why overdo the work, so to speak? Does any of this sound reasonable, or am I just unaware of something that's very obvious?
So, my questions are: Were flat wire collar tabs ever made? If so, was there anything special about these--are they rare? Could they have, as I have been told, been an officer's private purchase? Am I correct about the date that flat wire was first used, in general? Are there any specific books or reference sources where I can find photos and more information about flat wire collar tabs?
Many thanks in advance to all who may answer my questions...
