    Deutschland Artillery?

    Hello Everyone,

I have a question about the Deutschland Regiment that has puzzled me for some time.

I had always assumed that the Deutschland Regiment was entirely Panzer-Grenadier. However, in a book titled Waffen-SS Uniforms and Insignia, there is a photo of what is described as a Russian-captured uniform, with artillery shoulder boards and a Der Fuhrer cufftitle. Since Der Fuhrer was another Panzer-Grenadier Regiment of the Das Reich Division, I then began to wonder.

In another book specifically about the Das Reich Regiment, I have also read about a "heavy gun company" assigned to Deutschland. Although it didn't say artillery, "heavy guns" sounds like artillery to me.

So, my question is this: Was there any artillery company, unit, personnel, etc. which was permanently assigned to the Deutschland Regiment, so that they would have worn a Deutschland cufftitle rather than one for Das Reich? I would like to know this so that I can group artillery officer insignia and accoutrements with a Deutschland cufftitle, with historical accuracy.

I have often wondered about the inconsistencies of tunic, waffenfarbe and cufftitle - having noticed several tunics that have an infantry regimental cufftitles and the waffenfarbe of another arm of service (such as the Deutschland tunic with artillery waffenfarbe). Or, conversely, panzer and assault gun wrappers that have infantry cufftitles - eg Germania on a panzer wrapper.

In panzer-gremadier divisions, only one of the two panzer-grenadier regiments had one of its battalions mounted on half-tracks - the case of Das Reich, it was the Der Fuhrer PG regiment. This regiment was also authorized a platoon of self-propelled "Grille" howitzers. To my mind, only the half-track battalion and the Grille platoon personnel should have worn assault gun wrappers. In regards to panzer wrappers, I can think of only one case (Hermann von Salza) where panzer troops would have not worn a divisional cufftitle.

As for infantry cufftitles and other waffenfarbe, I suppose, for example, that an infantry officer posted to an artillery regiment in a non-cufftitled division (eg Nord) could have retained a regimental cufftitle. I would suspect that this was comparatively rare indeed.

As I'm not so convinced on the answer to this question, I thought I would dredge this old thread to the top . . . Would it have been possible to see a member of the "Deutschland" or "Der Fuhrer" Regiment with red-colored waffenfarbe for Artillery on their shoulderboards?

This issue was widely discussed in the first couple of pages of this thread:
