I'm still waiting for someone to post evidence of the use of human hair in the manufacture of SS uniforms. Lots of hearsay and conjecture but where is the DNA and microscopic proof? Those who believe they own helmets etc padded with human hair need to stand up and provide indisputable evidence of such. Going off on tangents about torpedoes and soap doesnt answer the original question.

In the years after the war, many stories have been put up.
Lamps made out of tattood skin, soap made out of human fat, a gas chamber in Dachau,...
They all proved to be false. Born in the imagination of some ill persons.
I think this story is also a fantasy piece.
Just stick to the facts that are known for sure.

However I cant tell about human hairs used or not. But as for a lot of other stories I think they are just made up "to make it even more legitimate" to hate the nazis. Stories are spread I pressume to make it feel more ok to have bombed the living daylights out of the German population. "treat them like animals because they are all evil murderers" To demonise the enemy has been used so often through history to make it easier to hate the ones you kill. Its part of the propaganda machinery. I think today its also used, with the growing numbers of neo-nazis, to present "stories" like this as political tools. The truth is scaring enough IMO.
As an interesting side note I read in the news today that a scientist from Norway wanted to make biodiesel out of liposucked fat from american clinics. I wonder how that will be recieved.

The italians perfected the process of making a synthetic wool from milk casein prior to the war. I can't imagine why they would need to mix in human hairs to augment their wool production. anyway here are some facts about Lanital.
Milk fibres were the first commercially viable azlons. Dr Frederich Todtenhaupt, a chemist, patented a German ‘casein silk’ fibre in 1904 but his company Deutsche Kunstseidenfabrik went bankrupt in 1919. Antonia Ferretti developed an improved process which was used by Snia Viscosa, an important Italian synthetic fibre manufacturer, for two commercial fibres – Lanital and Merinova. Mussolini actively supported these fibres as part of his programme of Italian economic self-sufficiency: ‘CarcadĂ© (hibiscus tea) replaces tea, lignite replaces coal, Lanital replaces wool’.
NAME: Lanital<O></O>
DATE INTRODUCED:Lanital was the first successful fiber made of milk casein. It was an ItalianAntonio Ferretti who perfected the process and was issued a patent by the Italian government in 1935. In 1938 a patent was granted to the United States Department of Agriculture for making of casein fiber using a different method than that used<O></O>
in making lanital. In 1940 a casein fiber known as aralac was announced. The physical and chemical properties are similar to the Italian product, lanital <O></O>
DESCRIPTION: First successful commercial fiber made of milk casein. Chemically, lanital is quite similar to wool and can be dyed with the same kinds of dyes. Moths will not attack it, and it does not shrink as much as wool but mildews easily when damp.<O></O>
OTHER NAMES: Arlac in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region w:st="on"><ST1lace w:st="on">United States</ST1lace></st1:country-region> <O></O>
IDENTIFICATION: It burns with the same characteristic odor as wool, but does not have the surface scales that wool fibers have. The casein fibers cannot be distinguished from wool fibers by chemical or burn tests. They have practically the same chemical composition as wool and both have the odor of feathers when burned, leaving a black crisp ash. Both wool and casein fibers are easily dissolved in alkali's and are resistant to acids.<O></O>

Those who believe they own helmets stuffed with human hair, maybe you need to get out of "The Land Of Oz" & into the real world. Yes I owned one that did, if you like it or not I really don't care. Kinda hard now to examine it with a microsope as I sold it in 1976 ! But I do know the difference bewtween human hair & horse hair.I found it disgusting that it contained human hair, & not just 1 color of it either. Collecting militaria is one thing which I immensly enjoy due to the military history of it, problem is some jokers believe in the Nazi ideology that comes with it. Those people give collecting 3rd Reich militaria a bad name & is why the hobby is looked down upon by most the public. Unfortunately collecting WW2 German militaria one must realize that the darker side of it is also a part of history that did happen, & unfortunately that stigma follows the hobby. Furthermore I shared an experience I had with one helmet, that contained human hair in the padding as I thought it pertained to the subject. Others have contributed some valid discussion also. I don't know about the use of human hair in uniforms, but they did use it in al least the helmet I owned.Last edited by Jerry45; 12-06-2006, 07:18 PM.

Getting Hairy !
Jerry:
I know alot of people who have alot of helmets and nobody has ever said this, if it was common we would all know about it. To bad you do not have the helmet, it could sure help. And Ilse Koch's husband was executed by the SS and she was next. One sick lady.

Dr. Totenkopf, well for discussions sake I wish I still had it....I spoke tonight with a collector friend whom had a Police helmet , same thing he told me, dress pattern material on top of cushion, however he does not know what the padding was. I think in the future as people start to explore this subject more will come to light. The helmet was very rare & desirable , however the fact it was stuffed with human hair is why I sold it, gave me the willies.......if it was just padding I'd still own it today.I used to look at that damned thing & it just creeped me out to where I needed to unload it.

Hello All,
I once owned a SS arm band that was sewn together with human hair, it was part of a KZ grouping. I was never 100% convinced that the hair hadn’t been added at a later time.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>
I think it was common for all prisoners in the concentration camps to have their hair shaved off upon entering the camps, I think this had more to do with camp conditions and hygiene.<o></o>

BNZ,
I believe I have read, in several accounts, that the shrunken head from Buhenwald was a museum piece which had been made by Jivaro Indians, in South America, and not the head of a Russian prisoner. I am sure having a shrunken head would have had the desired effect of terrorizing prisoners.
