    SS M40/Kharkov parka questions

    Ganze Liste,

    I have a few questions about the SS m40 and "Kharkov" type parkas that I'm hopeing I can have answered here. Did the majority of these parkas have the following features;

    1. Windcuffs inside the sleeves.

    2. Under arm vents.

    In the Beaver/Borsarello SS Camo book they show several fotos of this type parks in use as well as on display. The display models tend to have two different button setups on the front closure. On one the button holes run vertical and on the other the button holes are horizontal. I own a full button front fur lined parka in Italian camo and the closure is the storm flap type with the button holes being horizontal. It has the wind cuffs as well as the under arm vents. I'm wondering if the earlier style parkas had these features as well or were these modifications that were added after years of trial and error.

    Sepp,

    I have a 'half' button Parka. It's at home but as far as I recall it has no underarm ventilation vents. I recall the button holes on the half flap are horizontal on the pockets they are vertical, I do not think it has storm cuffs but I am a not 100% sure that my memory has this detail right, I'll check when I am home next weekend.

        Parka

        Hello, I have an early example of a pullover style parka, it has reinforced slit vents in the arm pits and also has elastic cuffs inside the sleeve openings. The button holes are horizontal on the front and vertical on the pockets. The pockets are pleated and the hood is very large to go over the helmet. Those two features are supposed to be indicative of early versions. A later type of pull over was made with a smaller hood before they went to the open front version and large hoods again. A lot of the pull over versions were also field/factory modified into open front coats. The versions are discussed in Beaver's SS Camo Uniforms book and you can see the seams for the elastic cuffs on the outside of all versions for the jacket shell.

        Hope that helps,

        John

            Sepp,

            Apologies for a delay in repying I see John gave you an answer .I can confirm the same specifications on my Parka, under arm vents, large hood and storm cuffs.

            regards

              Mark,
              Outstanding!! Thank you for your reply! These traits seem to be a constant in a large percentage of the Kharkov Parkas then.

              Thanks again!
