Correct medal placement

Hey guys, Ive got a model 43 tunic that appears to have had medals/badges at one point, my question is this, would the average trooper have loops sewn onto his tunic or merely pin them on with the pin through the cloth? Im sure both methods were used but what is most common?

And the nicest. Recently saw a great medical M36 officer tunic that had been ruined by having iron cross 1st class pinned through the cloth.

Thanks, I have remnants of loops and will just leave it that way all of them are worn through
