I agree on the mismatch Ben. What about the Stirnduckfrei pad in the front ? That wouldn't appear with an issue interior either would it ? Seems just another pointer to it being a Frankenstein cap. Nice totenkopf though.

yes lads the piping is definately red, i thought i might be sat in a corner now crying over spilt milk, but alas no. its hard without hands on i know. at least no smart alec has pointed out the heer eagle .the wear outside is pretty moth eaten, difficult to tell on the pics, the band must have been pulled down a thousand times over the years, hence the exagerated appearance of wear, any thoughts on the skull, come on chaps your bieng really gentle on me, is it to get my subs first kind regards phil.

I don't think the orange sponge has much of a bearing either way. I've got an Officers bergmutze with one of these glued in it!?

Phil, did you check to see if any other holes go through the pasteboard either side of the skull?

sorry if my last post was out of context, must of been posting same time as you both, yes ben ,ive pulled the stitching forward to see if there is any holes where a cockade may have been prior, and no, there are no holes other than for the tk. i too think the velvet seens quite fresh in comparison to the rest of it, just a question, do moth lava eat every type of fabric? or is velvet of the menu? is it a possible nco upgrade? or am i wishful thinking, if only we owned a magic ball.

That's a good point about moths and velvet. From what I've seen, I don't think they like velvet that much and they usually leave it well alone. The band should still show some natural ageing though.

My primary concern when I first saw the cap was the poor re-sew job on the sweatband (and the Heer eagle... ). From what I have seen, velvet is one of the few fabrics that moths do not go after on uniforms, but the velvet on this cap seems rather fresh, as Ben has already noted, in comparison to the remainder of the cap body. My impression is that of a parts cap...
