Reichsminister und Chef d. Reichskanzlei. b. May 1879; d. January 1962. A man with a background in the law and the civil service (...especially with an anti-Republican bent in the years 1919-1932...), he went from the conservatives (DNVP) to the Nazis ca. early-1932. He received SS rank in 1933, at the time of the Machtergreifung, comensurate with his civil service standing. He was also legal advisor to Hitler, but his entree with same diminished in the course of the final years of the regime with the ascendancy of Bormann as the leading figure in the Reichskanzlei and the NSDAP. See entry above. sapere aude. There is no equivalent in our government (i.e. US) save perhaps White House chief of staff, but such a description cannot encompass the real character of Dr. Lammer's role as head of the Reichskanzlei.
