    There have been several threads on this and other forums dealing with "field made" garments. IMO, the hat you have posted could only fall into this "field made" category.

    As such an item, collectors will for ever be leery of the authenticity of such a piece.

    Specifically, as this relates to this example, if it is an original period "field made" piece, the "owner" would certainly, it would seem, have chosen to wear it. From the pictures showing the hat internally, it does NOT show any evidence of this.

      AGREE 100%! There are so many repro'ed SS caps of non-standard design that they are a very dangerous area of militairia to collect. Did period odd field made caps exist? Sure! However, without iron clad provenance on a particular piece, it is best to avoid them all together. Many collectors, of all collecting interests, collect only "issue" militaria, for only these provide a "benchmark" from which to judge authenticity.

            A Reproduction, Yes certainly.

            However, fault by markings could prove problematic. Over the years I have seen (not often) examples of original garments, both hats and uniforms, that have been (for what ever reason) "embellished" with various types of spurious stamps and markings. In essence marring a perfectly good item. Conversely, recently, I have seen numerous bad items with "Russian film" stampings in an effort to promote their authenticity.

            To me, it would be well within the realm of possibility for an item like the one in this thread, which IMO could ONLY be believed in the context of it being a "field produced" item to have some type of markings added, post war, in order to help foster it's believability.

            Again, I also believe the hat to be a Reproduction piece. And the point of the markings is without doubt germane. However, my opinion is a result based less due to the markings and more due to the hats other features.

              I think we gave some good reasons to stay away from that particular cap.
              IMO the SS BW stamp is bogus, the pattern is repro and the lining doesn't look right...this tells me that it can't be a fieldmade item from earlier than 1945.

              Sure fieldmade caps in dot pattern exsist as they do in any other period camo pattern.... Still the "originals" were made using original materials.

                    Wow Bob, that is a "blast from the part". I remember Ken Sass really well. I visited him a number of times at his home in La Porte. He had a bunch of fake items, but every once in awhile, something very good popped up. I got a really nice early bullion runic tab with black/silver trim from him. I think I still have it. Next time I get a chance, I will post some photos of it...Tom

                        Yes, as far as his stories go, he was a liar. But is was fascinating to visit him and see what he had. There was some good stuff in amongst the crap...Tom
