For members wanting to see pictures of Waffen SS troops in converted (recycled) Wehrmacht tunics I recommend the book "Meine Ehre Heist Treue" by Olli Wikberg which covers the Finnish volunteers, an awesome book! On page 101 you'll see a Finnish volunteer wearing a 5 button M40 ex Heer tunic with Waffen SS shoulderboards. The Heer litzen and breast eagle have been removed (traces very clearly visible in the picture) but waffen collar tabs have yet to be added... and on p.118 you'll see a 6 button Army tunic with SS insignia and again clearly visible traces of a removed breast eagle, so there is proof (especially among the freiwilligen units) that recycling took place. On p. 105 you'll even see a picture of an unterscharfuhrer wearing a Finnish M36 Summer tunic with full SS insignia! Anything was possible with volunteer units I guess...If members are interested I can scan and e-mail these pics... I can not post them...limited membership... sorry!!!
My question remains unanswered (earlier in this thread)... Any thoughts on this: could it have happened that some Schuma/ordungspolizei members (Ukraine and Baltics especially) retained their polizei green field combat tunics when they were hastidly incorporated in to the Waffen SS in late 1944 to fill the ranks...and simply exchanged the insignia (re-badging)? I'm asking because I've seen period pictures of what appear to be Polizei combat tunics (pleated chest pockets, unpleated skirt pockets), but with full waffen ss insignia... Just wondering?
Does anybody have further proof of this practice in their collection? Thanks Nick California
