Fez itself looks ok but yep, bad insignia. This dealer should know better...

The Fez looks to be a real one. This is a excellent example of someone stripping off the original insignia and selling it seperate due to the current values. I also agree with Ben, bad choice on behalf of the dealer to put repro insignia back on. He would have been better off to sell the fez as is. Grant

                  Lelez,

Hopefully they'll continue to put this easily-identified reproduction insignia on it so that a novice can figure it out and avoid it.

                      A reply from Kris

                      Hello,
Kris from Oakleaf Militaria asked Me to post this information on His behalf. He has pulled this item from His site, and He has this to say to fellow collectors:
                      Hello David,

Since I don't visit the Forum, I'm not aware of the criticisms except that my prices are considered high. I tried to contact " " yesterday about the insignia on the fez but he wasn't home when I called. I purchased the fez from " "at the SOS." " who you might know is a pretty reliable collector and dealer. He told me that he got it straight from the vet who liberated it from Dachau. I had no reason to doubt him.

I'll try again to reach " " today regarding the insignia. Personally I like it but .....

Regarding my prices, as you know the good stuff is getting harder and harder to find. When I find "inventory worthy" pieces I have to pay a good dollar to acquire them. I see so much fake stuff at the shows that I believe the collecting community would be shocked if they knew just how many bad pieces the average collector has in his collection.

You yourself know just how hard it is to find what was once more readily available. People routinely approach me at shows and ask, "why is your price...when his over there is ....?" It's not in my character to say "because his isn't real and he didn't pay a realistic market price to acquire it".

I do not want collectors to approach my tables with a "buyer to aware" attitude. I do my "due diligence" whenever I have a question. You know who I send my SS clothe to. I also connect with known authorities (some well known authors) for panzer, FJ, AK and medals/awards.

I stay away from pieces I consider risky like SS helmets (unless I'm positive).

David, feel free to post this response if you like,

Thank you for contacting me and best regards.

                      Kris Anderson
                      Thanks again,

                      Kris

And He wanted to add this as well:Also, please add - that if anyone has an issue with any of my pieces that they should contact Kris Anderson directly. I'll be happy to respond to them our take their concerns under consideration. I don't know everything but I try to run my website free of anything that isn't authentic.

                      Thanks again,

                      Kris

I've always thought Kris to be a Person I can trust and this has not changed. Sincerely, David J. Bunde

Maybe you should visit the Forum Kris. You might learn something even if you don't contribute.

This type of fake skull is available on a few repro sites. The caps in the attached pics are from one repro site in Japan. They have almost every type of repro SS headgear you could ask for.
