    SS Bayonet

Another one that I have in my collection that I picked up on impuse buy at a local gun show. 1st warning was the cheap price, 2nd warning was that it came from a dealer who mainly sells repros. Give me the bad news I got to know.

Hi Brett, sorry this is a British made fantasy item from the 1970's. The bayonet itself is original, but the etch is not.

Sorry to see you have have a lot of bad news on the items you have posted for us to see.

          Cheers, Ade.

I can assure you that these etched bayonets are British made fantasy items. I know who made them. They were available from him with almost any unit designation you desired. Many of the older Britsh members here will remember the adverts in the old "Exchange & Mart" magazine. I think they sold for about £12 or £15 back then? These items are no longer made. Back in the 1970's K98 bayonets were common and had little value compared with today. These old fantasy bayonets still come onto the market as old collections are sold and as a result continue to fool a new generation of collectors.

Combat K98 bayonet were not found with etched inscriptions.

Private purchase "Parade bayonets" with bright plated blades and fittings etc with inscriptions are another matter. They are a subject in their own right.

              Cheers, Ade.

Thanks for the bad news guys, Ive always had a bad feeling about the items Ive listed today. Still its best to know. I have to value my collection soon, and its best not to pay high insurance premiums because of fakes. Its a pity the internet and this forum wasnt around a lot earlier.
Ive sold off a few repros in the last year, most of which I picked up in the 1970s and early 80s thinking they were originals. The funny thing is Ive got alot more money for them than I paid, selling them as reproductions. Ironic when you think about it. Still, would have been better off putting the money in the bank. But not half the fun.
                Cheers Brent

I agree with ade, was it not barry smith that made these?, although messed about with there are people who actually collect these.

actually it would make a good present for someone i know so if you are moving it let me know
                  cheers
                  Gary
