I have edited and removed some of the post's above, my reason is that the thread was started to discuss a pair of shoulder straps, not the legal aspect or who is selling them, i hope you all understand just trying to keep the thread clean if not by all means PM me many thanks Gary
Thanks for the postiing of the side by side..needless to say...bad boards all the way around! Collecting this stuff just keeps on getting more fun by the moment!
Thank you Scott, for your professional advice. In the US do you have the saying "the law is an Ass" ?
I have found in my experience that you are as good as your lawyer and no one can ever pick which way the Judge will lean towards on the day. I do not think however that such a case would get to court because it is the demon SS, Nazi thing but stranger things have happened.
What is more important from my point of view is what you and Gary have achieved by comparing the two sets of boards. Now that has really got me thinking and as I have said I am trying to learn what is good and what is bad in SS shoulder boards. I am not trying to defend these boards, just learn.
I say good luck to any one who buys Camo-helmets, complete tunics and SS boards, you better know what you are doing. Can any one else share some information or do we now have a verdict ?
Thanks Chris..we have a host of such sayings..however..the real scary thing to me is that these boards may be widely accepted as original..have been on the market for sometime..and as goes with every repro in this hobby...the fakers only learn from their mistakes..and Im sure todays "pickings" are better than these. Unfortunately this has taken quite a bit of the wind out of the "fun" aspect of the sail of collecting. It is my fault for not returning them when I had my doubts about them..however..I placed my trust in the source. That is not an excuse..but a valued lesson. Hopefully others will be saved the 200 plus Euro's mistake..however...Im afraid as Ive mentioned the fakers are probably well beyond this version and into something more convincing.
I relate also to what you mean by having the fun taken out of it. I have started collecting Imperial German beer steins because I am frustrated by the crazy prices of 3rd Reich and quality of the reproductions. There does not seem to be alot of interest in steins and reproductions are just not of the quality of the real thing many of which are now over a hundred years old. Not to say I will not buy SS stuff. I am just not buying every piece that comes along and trying to make sure that what I buy is real, Chris
Chris..the fact that the boards are bad does not take away anything in my opinon from Peter..he has ALWAYS been wonderful to deal with.and have many nice pieces from him..people make mistakes..everyone makes mistakes..its just part of collecting. While I love SS items..financially it is not at the heart of my collection..but it has always fascinated me...I still think I have some very very wonderful and representative items..but as with everything..the good comes with the bad....short of NOT collecting..I think there is no way to avoid mistakes..only to minimize them.
I agree totally Scott, unders equal overs. Collecting 3rd Reich militaria is becoming increasingly scientific.
It is a case of finding the time and doing the homework but some-times you just have to take the gamble. Great feeling when it turns out to be right however. Bummer when it does not.
Lets hope you strike gold on that next deal, Chris
