Vet Bring Back SS Picture & Sleeve Eagle

I had posted this picture on another thread and thought there might be some interest on this forum. Both items were Canadian Normandy vet bring back.

    Regards,

These lads are from 25th or 26th 26 Pz.Gren Rgt. 'HJ' unless I'm mistaken. The kid on the right looks very familiar, wonder if he's one of those pictured in the famous series of 'HJ' grenadiers ?

The look in their eyes is so telling..especially the soldier at right...utter hoplessness..despair.

I didn't think that I would be so touched when I clicked on this thread.

The comments above are so true; The preservation of these moments in time, and being able to touch real items from that moment, are what this hobby is all about.

If anyone can read German handwriting here is the..

..reverse of the picture. It would be great to get a correct translation since I have trouble reading that kind of handwriting.

I think it says "Wir beiden sind das"..we both are the..and then Im still trying to work on the translation..its not old german..I dont think.just hard to read handwriting.

I think the date is obviously april 26..44...Frankreich..or France.thats my best stab at it to date.

very nice..I think Ian is right, that lads face on the right is familiar.
There are a lot of Canadian Normandy vets passing now,and a lot of these items are coming up . The Germans threw the cream of the 12th ss at the Canadians,in a futile bid first to dislodge them, then to hold a corner of the Falaise gap open for German forces retreating in the West. Hard to believe, but the HJ lost the better part of 20,000 men in a little over a month, mostly against the Canucks..it's a wonder you don't see more ss items in Canada

Great items Did the Vet serve with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders?? These items were probably taken from an SS POW or possibly a corpse..

The vet was with the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada

...so the likelyhood of the picture being from a 12th SS member is pretty good.
