[QUOTE=ingsoc39] I simply posed the question..open to debate and discussion as to WHEN in the manufacture processof mid to late war SS tunics the rank and ss runes (and eagles) were affixed to the tunic...at time of manufacture..at depot level..or otherwise.

Eagle applied at factory (if at all), all other insignia at time of issue to soldier.

Perhaps then it would have been better for you to post one of your own SS tunics in a new thread to start a discussion on manufacturing. It might have been more interesting and less liable to cause confusion amongst newer collectors who buy one piece and ask to have it critiqued. Too often when a topic is sidetracked the owner of the piece becomes confused and doesnt know what to think. Simple opinion and reason are enough. How do I know this? Because I get numerous emails that point this out from confused parties.

You find my postings rude yet you set out with the first rude comment that you find it typical of me.I dont even know you nor do you know me.This is the first time Ive noticed you in fact. You dont have to read my comments. I just hate the thought that we're trying to take tunic collecting down the same avenues as metal badge collecting which manufacturing techniques and flaws are relevant in fake detection. This cannot be done with tunics but might be tried, to give everything that "textbook" aura in order for them to sell. Over the years Ive noticed comments on some forums especially regarding Heer tunics such as "the eagle appears replaced". When im looking at the same photo and cant see this and only see that the insignia was attached by hand therefor assumed it was reattached, when in fact no one really knows unless they were there when it was done.
Another tunic was posted once that personally I felt was rebadged but because I cannot prove it and definately couldnt tell when, I refrain from making that personal thought known. I keep my question relevant or I use language to encourage further investigation. In this case I cant tell either but its done well enough, the age and wear is there, and the small details like the litzen and stains in certain places just reinforce my feelings.Without holding and finding synthetic threads etc.its impossible to tell by computer pictures. Sorry to ramble and hope you understand my concerns

            Hey John,

But you do know Insoc39 from the GDC forum.... Scott A Hess.

One of the GDC SS forum moderators I do believe. Hope I didn't let the cat out of the bag Scott, but we are all friends here.

Our numbers are dwindling, so perhaps a bit of discipline is necessary here among all concerned, nicht wahr? I note the diminishing number of those who post on these fora as well as the sudden death of the world militaria site (which I did enjoy too...) , and since I esteem all my colleagues, I enjoin all at hand to exercise some degree of restraint...man tanzt mit den Damen im Saale, which in this case means, we depend on each other...or perhaps I am naive. I have also soldiered on on this site when subjected to peculiar lectures about my capacity to deal with non-native speakers or readers of English, despite being married to one. We all depend on this medium for information, knowledge, diversion, &c, and the degree to which we descend into vitriole harms our own interests in the end. That being said, of course, I understand how easy it is to become enraged at certain things that appear here, though. It would all be much more civil, were it vis a vis. Sapere aude.

Thanks, dear colleague. Now do very much ask my students how little I actually follow the above gentlemanly advice, when I become enraged in class, which does happen with some regularity. However, I am fond of both of my West Coast colleagues and know that others require their insight and wisdom, or we shall all be much poorer. If you go back on the GDC forum a few years ago, the paucity and understrength quality of the thing now is very shocking and troubling to me really. I am sure that much valuable knowledge goes glimmering because of the manner in which this medium can bring out the innerer Schweinehund in all of us. But I respect both Kontrahenten here and selfishly state my personal need of their wisdom and counsel. Sapere aude.

I would most agree on the importance of civility on this forum - the Private Message option is always available for more impassioned replies, and I have certainly been the recipient of such invectives in the past, no doubt deservedly. The quality of input on the complexities of this hobby has, we would all agree with Donald, exploded over the past couple of years - let us further this, and not yield to, and validate, the kind of outright trashy replies we sometimes find on a companion forum.

Well, I guess this thread is at an end. We've established the tunic at hand is real and no further discussion is warranted. So let's move on and create more threads of interest and stay focused on the item at hand.

                      All aboard!

No cat to be let out of the bag Glenn....I joined both forums around the same time...and found no option recently to change my screen name when I desired to do so a few weeks back to my name..I was also "ingsoc39"..no big surprise..before becoming one of the moderators on GDC.
