I have the tab of such construction in my collection and believe it is an early original tab.

                  Gary,
can you explain if the black gauze under the wool is a good sign or one of a known copy?
                  cheers

To Robert Hassler, "Gauze" is a term applied to a lightly woven cloth which is used in a hospitals to cover a light wound so it can breath as it heals.
You put the gauze over the wound and tape round the sides to hold it in place.

The material was also used in the manufacture of carpet depending on what gauge it is. Funny enough when it is tightly woven of a thick gauge they call it "Hessian" which will have a connection with the mercenaries from Hesse who served with the British forces at different times through out history especially in the American War of Independence.

                            with regards, Chris

                              Robert,
the explanation above just about covers it, sometimes you find it on the backs of hand embroidered cuff titles and some runics that are embroidered on felt (picture below), this type of patch though has it all the way to the edge of the black wool, which is something i have only seen on 2 tabs so far, one pictured above i examined at a show over here in England, the one that started the thread looks like the same type. By the way why have the pictures of the tab that started this thread been removed???????
                              cheers
