You might try holding the chest area of the coat to a strong light where the suspected wehrmacht eagle was . Look from the inside holding the jacket outside up to the light. In many cases the the light will reveal old stitching holes . This has worked for me well on ones I really couldn't see with normal examination.

A blacklight is very good at showing removed insigna and repairs.

I would not be surprised to see an SS M-44 tunic with replaced insignia. During the ending year of the Reich, I suppose anything that was suitable would be redone and issued out. I have seen studio portraits of SS men wearing reissued Heer tunics with the breast eagle outline clearly visiable.

The only question is WHEN; before May 1945, or after?

Yes, how now to understand. Still I see on the left sleeve a trace from cufftittle...

The law of averages would say it is restored post war as most are anyway,IMO. With a removed Heer breast eagle you would always have the nagging thought of "when was the SS insignia added"...

Personally I would pass on it..

Depends on the price really. All the component parts seem pretty good to me.

And there are more and there are numerous pictures in books where you can see the eagle outline on enlisted tunics ,tunics were recycled over and over.

I has talked with a seller of this tunic, he is our good friend and this tunic he has been bought in Germany for 800 EURO, approximately one month ago. Of course I bought it for more expensive price. How to check when insignia was applied, I not know... But for me, stitching of an eagle and collar tabs looks very professionally!!!... And I think now get it back or put it in my collection...
