    SS Fez production series?

HI; I checked out several SS Fezs on line and they had tan sweat bands. This one is nearly black. Looks like it was never worn. Stapled to a board and thumbtacked too for 60 years. Had 1/4th inch of dust on it when I got it. Do you guys think that this is a late Dacau one or some other maker? I've had several over the years. Can't seem to remember. There is no lable or markings in it I can see. A little moth tracking but no holes. What do you think is a fair value for this? Doug

Black sweatband is fine and not uncommon, on the red fez.

Black sweat bands are fine. Yours looks correct and my guess is about 800-900 dollars for a value of the red fez.

HI; Thank you very much. But, I was looking for a bit more. Does this one look like the late Dacau type or some other make? Are there several different original types? What are the differences? Only the red ones. Only seen one original green one. Thanks again. Doug

HI Douglas...as far as I have seen you will see a number of different style skulls on these fezes...I know they were found at Dachau for the most part (as the US did not have troops in Yugoslavia save for advisors/observors first with Draza then with Tito as Draza was collaborating with the Germans)...not sure if the German cadre of the division continued to fight in Austria or Germany after most of the men were sent home or took off...I would like to know if there is any evidence that the fezes were actually produced at Dachau or just stored there, or even partially produced there...IE mated with the insignia...I do not know if we would really call this a late type and do not know if there is a distinction in materials/techniques used in different time periods regarding construction of fezes.

HI; Some of the fezs have a stuffing behind the insignia. Mine does not. Mine has little manufactured silits in the back let's say 1/3rd of the black sweat band. They are kind of shifted more right. Mine has this cute little ad on to the rear joint (see picture). Not like the cheesy "X" sewn stich on the top of the plain tan sweat banded ones. Does anyone have one of these fezs with the balck sweat band with the little slits? Do you know where it was picked up at?

I have spoken to several vets who were at Dacau right after the capture. They had a bus tour for US officers in the area to visit. Many picked up hands full of insignia out of the works. I have gotten three or four bunches over the years. [I have a picture of this cute girl in a cotton print dress with an OST patch sewing something on a machine. In the background are rows of isles and bins to the low celing with a SS patchs on the front of each.] One of these guys told me that there were "thousands" of the red fezs (no green ones) and BALES of the "Ost Turkisher Waffen Verband Der SS" green cuff titles laying around. Another type of Red Fez???????

HI; A year ago or so I contacted this guy in Vancouver, BC about his dad's (deceased) collection. He had been a General in the Post war Polish Army. Collected nazi stuff. He had several SS camo shelter quarters. I reall like to see these. It means to me that he is Honest and did not disassemble them into hats, helmet covers, ect. Anyway he had the only green Fez I have ever seen. Taller, more pointy. Different. OK.

He had this red fez that I thought was a joke. It had this woven ratan insert and looked real shap edged on top. He had a room full of real stuff. Bunches of it I had never seen. Insignia looked good but who the hell am I. I don't know my but from a hot rock when it comes to SS stuff. Anyway, today this friend of mine Larry Waller shows up at the show and look at my Fez and talks about his with the woven ratan insert in it. He is a real stickler on originality. I trust him. Is this another known "good" example type? Ever seen any others like this. Don't have a picture yet but could get some I think. Doug
