    Welcome to the forum obergruppen.

Will you be posting photos of your Waffen SS cap after you receive it? I'm sure everybody would like to see it no matter what the condition.

I am serious, during and after the war, tons of Heer & Waffen -SS gear was taken by the soviets and a lot of vets and country folks kept such items as souveniers !!!
I have seen a whole mint collection of Heer & Waffen-SS stuff at a New Years party, almost had a heart attack ,have to convince him to sell some of it for a reasonable price !
Helmets can be found & bought for a small price but outside of Moscow !!!
I will have some stuff for sale soon and will post pics for you guys !!!
Lugers P 08,Walthers P 38,MP 40,MG 42 can be bought for less than 500 $ a piece but you can not ship them out of Russia,at least not that i know of !!!

Whats the first thing that comes to your mind when you see a german helmet ?
                I guess ww-2,Germans,well not me,potatoes come to my mind,tell you why !!!
I went once to my friends dacha, far from Moscow, had a great bbq and then i saw an old lady walking nearby with a german helmet in her hands filled up with potatoes!
I ran for my wallet and offered her some cash in order to purchase the helmet, she looked at me in bewilderment and asked, with or without the potatoes,i laughed of course and answered, without.
When we woke up in the morning there was a whole bag of potatoes at the doorsteps !!!

Obergruppen, Welcome to the forum. I know what you speak of is true, because my brother-in-law works for the US Embassy in Moscow. He is a Lt. Col. and was given a private tour in the lower levels of the Heroes Museum about five years ago and he told me that there is thousands of German items in crates and showcases. he said that there is storage crates five feet high filled with Lugars and P-38's. Also, he sent me a pic of some of the uniforms inside the showcases and I counted at least five Army assault gun tunics with various insignias. He also works on the MIA project for US sevicemen from the Korea and Vietnam wars. To date he has found the remains of seven US pilots, etc.. that were sent to Russia during those time frames as POWs. During his travels, he has visited several smaller museums in Murmansk, etc.. that has several German items. He told me that he would send me some items, but he has to be very careful not to jeopardize his security clearance. Anyway, just wanted to confirm what you were talking about. Grant.

I don't doubt what your saying is true guys. It's just frustrating to hear about it and not be able to see it for oneself.

Book yourself a hotel room in Moscow, get a tourist visa,i can show you around but then, all the stuff i mentioned is not to be looked for in Moscow, the guys here got internet, you have to go for a "long ride" and there are the real treasures, believe me,but if they hear that you are a foreigner, forget it,the prices will rise,so in that case, let me do the talking

Very interesting to hear the russian insight on this topic! And welcome to the forum!

But I wonder if this is the totally correct situation described. There has been several threads mentioning that russians buy up a lot of german militaria today, and specially edged weapons, from the west. Why would they do that if they still have this much left in their own country?

From what I have heard russians saying is that a lot of the german stuff is in bad condition and they really want to buy back a lot of items being sold abroad just after the collapse of the soviet union. And for some items prices are higher than in the west, or you can mostly find bad condition. This was said of Mosocw I know. And why do the russians go and dig out the trenches when there are so much nice stuff to find from the vets?

Also some have mentioned that soviet soldiers were punished hard if they were caught having nazi stuff. I have been to two museums in Belarus and there are some items on display but a lot of the time really rusty and in bad condition. I have been to flea kerkets in Republic of Moldova and belarus and I have not found any third rich items but some nice and cheap soviet medals that I bought! But I have heard a rumor of one guy in russia having like a private museum with some stuff, including a bunch of road signs and uniforms and other stuff. I will visit him the next time I go to Russia in February!

I have personally sold a maker marked walter PP mag to a guy in Moscow for USD 190 which is really more than I get for a really nice and rare luger mag. He sent me cash in a DHL express envelope costing another USD 25-30 Im sure. Ever wonder why Weitze have a Russian translation of his site?

                            Something doesnt add up here.

                            Just my thoughts!

                            Cheers,
                            Felix - N. Hansson

P.s. I have already taken two short courses in Russian because I find it interesting to travel in EE. And its nice to have Russian members here. And ofcourse basic russian takes you a long way when you want to travel or when you want to speak to the ochen krassiva devushki!

Dear Felix, you seem to be one of those non-believers but then that is just your opinion because you have not seen what i have seen and you have nobody who will take you to such locations because why give out such places to strangers, remember, all that i can get there costs at least ten to twenty times more on the internet and you never know what you get through the net!!!
Today in Russia there are more original items than all the rest of the world together so dont even try to convince me opposite because, seeing is believing!!!
I have purchased original Waffen-SS visor caps,Heer as well, helmets, daggers, uniforms etc and all in almost perfect condition with the exception of a few poor looking items !!!
We all know that with the exception of a few Waffen-SS divisions (LSSAH,HJ...) that surrendered to the GI 's in 1945 all the rest got in the hands of the Russians,so i rest my case !!!
