Hi Ben, what I call the "piping" is next to the green highlight you have placed on the photo. The thick seam. You can see it well on mine.

That's right Ade but what I marked green is what's refered to as the "false" piping on these SS sidecaps I believe....or I might be completely wrong..

I strongly suspect it is newly made from original materials.

My thoughts as well,

Regarding the false piping that is found on most waffen-ss caps it can also be found on CA side caps as well, sometimes there is a slight colour difference on the wool used on CA caps sometimes not.
