Great pics Also note what appears to be camo paint and what looks like netting on some of the SS enlisted soldiers. Rare indeed.

Could be the same tunic in the 2nd and 3rd pic with the tabs being changed at some point. Only speculation of course.

The 1st picture shows him in a tunic with the "K" collar tab as an SS-Scharfuhrer, but in the last pictures with him wearing the greatcoat, same rank shows him with the Totenkopf collar tab on his greatcoat. Evidently he changed the "K" to "Totenkopf" collar tabs sometime after the first picture was taken but while still an SS-Scharfuhrer. Nice stuff... I always thought that SS-Scharfuhrer was a technical rank or in some cases a dead-end rank, no possibility of promotion, but apparently he got promoted to SS-Oberscharfuhrer.

Could very well be! Looks heavy on some (thought it may be netting on one) and others it does not.

As ever, your photos are astonishing. Do you have an idea of the time or context of the review including what look to me like Hungarians as well as Italians in the final set of postings, along with the HJ Fuehrer with RK? And, to be sure, an Allgem SS uniform worn by whom....? The expression in this man's eyes, as well as the body language are quite singular. I also note the absence of a cuff title, together with the piped collar patches on the Feldbluse. Many thanks for all of this, indeed. Weiterhin viel Sammlerglueck!

Robert, in the 4th picture ,detail of him leaning on tree, he has a cypher on his shoulderboard , the most common of which would be a gothic O, B, or T, it does not appear to be any of these, which are the Totenkopfverbande regiments as per 1937 . Anybody know ?? thanks for the pictures great as usual.

it is mud. But at my first look I had the same thoughts as You. I also thought that it is some experimental or improvised camo-netting. But these are the ammo-pouches for the machine-gun.

Here's a detail of that photo that shows that these men had some very close contact with mother earth.



Look at the machinegun, heavy mud.

The two photos of italians and hungarians on parade are not dated. However the KC-holder dates them at least after 1939. No further information.

The photo leaning on the tree, with a close-up lens I would strongly believe it is the "L" or maybe a "2".

Jim,
I think it is the Gothic "L" signifying his role in training (Lehr). The other picture with the group of trainees would support this, as would his rank. These cyphers were introduced in May 1940 so it also helps date this picture. Robert, thanks for the excellent set of portraits.

Perhaps he went on to be a trainer at a Truppen Ubungslager after Nordhausen Dora-Mittelbau,the recruits look too fit to be part of a Totenkopfwacht Sturmbann by this part of the war.

One other question/observation .... On the enlarged picture the recruit behind the machine-gunner is certainly very young for an Ehrenwinkel,did service in the DJ/HJ count towards this award ?
