The tab looks good to me, but I think it might have never been finished. No backing material, crude edge lines, etc. I have several US insignia that were 'factory errors' and just discarded, but somewhere along the way someone thought to save it from the trash pile.

I agree...I think the thread on the spool broke when they were making this piece leaving the unfinished area.

Thank you all for your comments. I think the broken thread on the spoole is a good explanation in this case.

Most likely a factory reject! The folding of the edges are probably done post war to make it look like an issued collar tab.

Hello Felix. Yes, the folding could be postwar. Has anyone seen tabs or patches with this kind of defect before? (thread suddenly missing).

                      Regards

                      Pedersen.

I have seen some of the foreign volunteer tabs with this type of defect, I have also seen this effect on eagles and have seen SS tabs with what looked like a smaller percentage of thread used to make the tab.

I have never figured out though if these came at the end of a spool of thread, or if the thread on the spool just broke. Either way you are either going to get a wasted tab or wasted thread.

Thanks John T. I guess i just have to live with this tab and the defect on the SS rune.

                          Best regards

I agree a original faulty tab, try holding it up to a strong light to see if there are stitch holes in the area where the missing thread is, and also around the outside edge where it would have been sewn onto a collar.

It could have been post war folded or it could have been a period faulty example that has with some use unravelled this would occur if for example the rear stitching had a fault with the tension, I say this because if you look carefully at the back at the outer line on the inside portion you can see some of the stitching is bunched up.

                            Just a thought
                            cheers
                            Gary

Hi Gary. Holding it op to a strong light I see stitch holes in the area where the missing thread ought to be. But I see no stitch holes around the outside. So perhaps it could be post war folded.
