    Identification wanted on SS badge

    Hi,

I have just been given a box of militaria which I believe my grandfather obtained whilst serving abroad in the British military during the 1st & 2nd world wars.

Please can you confirm it is a SS badge please? I have found a number of variations online. It says M1/72 on the back.

    Many thanks

    Ian.

          Hi,

Thank you ever so much for the helpful replies!

I have just been looking further into this online and found one on a shop website saying "RZM M1/72 rare in solid aluminium!". Is there a way of finding this out? It is not magnetic, but I don't know what typical ones were made of.

          Thank you again.

          Ian.

Looks to me like a zinc eagle not aluminum. Vince

This is a very nice eagle. I believe it is made of CupAl. As with many CupAl examples, the copper has turned black. For anyone that doesn't know, CupAl is a clad like material made with layers of aluminum and copper stuck together. In this case, (as with most), the center core is aluminum, and the outer front and back are thin copper with finish applied on both sides. CupAl was the first material used to make SS eagles for the Allgemeine SS. There were also a few that were made of two layer CupAl, which was simply aluminum with a copper sheet on the back side only.

              Hope this helps!

              Chris
