To my knowledge there is no way of telling. The Gestapo wore ordinary leather overcoats in black, brown, etc. for their undercover work. They just wore regular civilian clothes so they blended in with the population so they could easdrop on people. The only difference that I know of between a purely civilian leather overcoat and one worn by the military were the apparatus for attaching slip on shoulder boards. You primarily see officers wearing leather overcoats because they were given a uniform allowance with which to buy their uniforms and could therefore afford to buy the leather overcoats. These were NOT issued to the enlisted men, but a private purchase garment. I have a friend who owns a gray leather overcoat and it has SS-Obergruppenfuhrer slip on shoulder boards on it. The only thing that makes the coat an SS General is the shoulder boards, which can easily be removed and substituted with any SS or maybe even Luftwaffe officer boards. Otherwise, they're just civilian leather overcoats. My opinion for what it's worth. Maybe somebody more knowledgable than me can shed more light on these but I think that's the bottom line on these...

No such thing as "Gestapo coats", these were simple civil coats.

But there were these rubberized motor coats.
        They were military issue.

This issue is treated in threads elsewhere. I suggest that the garment above is a civilian leather trench coat of a kind that existed as late as the 1970s. Surely this pattern was also used in the III. Reich period. However, this kind of overcoat was also quite common in the 1950s and 1960s with advent of prosperity in West Germany.

            Norge-

The Gestapo men would not have been very "secret" if they all wore the same civilian clothing. The stereotype of the leather coat clad Gestapo man is an image aroused through the cinema, not reality. I concur with opinions cited by our other esteemed members.

If you bought it on a flee market, and the GESTAPO disc is still in the pocket you may consider it to be a real GeStaPo leather coat .

I was offered a leather coat a few years ago by a dealer who stated it was for a member of the Gestapo. When asking how he came to this conclusion, he stated there was a small metal ring sewn to the inside (rather like the dagger hanger in officers tunic) which was for attaching the warrant disc & chain. Maybe this is correct, I don't know, but it might be worth checking the inside of these coats for anything similar.
